dorkroom.art is a collection of specialized calculators and tools designed for analog photographers and darkroom enthusiasts. built to keep complex exposure math, border calculations, and chemistry planning out of your way so you can focus on making beautiful prints.
what is dorkroom?
built using typescript, react, vite, and supabase, this is a full stack web application that provides many helpful tools for photographers with a beautiful interface

border calculator
the highlight feature of dorkroom is the border calculator, which aims to help folks printing in the darkroom get accurate borders that maintain the aspect ratios and desired border sizes they want

development recipes
the most involved feature is the development recipe page, which lists hundreds (soon to be thousands) of film development recipes for all sorts of black and white films and developers

with the recipes, films, and developers provided by the backend API, users can find the exact recipe they’re looking for, and share it with others. users can also create custom recipes to save locally and share with others via a data-encoded URL.
why dorkroom?
dorkroom was created due to a frustration i found working at the harvey milk photo center. members often wanted to have very precise borders that either enabled them to have the full image of their film negative, or wanted to create a print with an offset so as to not have a perfectly centered print. i found myself doing a lot of napkin math to help members find the exact measurements for the printing easel they were using, and realized this could be replaced by a user friendly UI.
after that, the other features i added to dorkroom were made to consolidate many common film and photography calculators into one easy to use website that works on both desktop and mobile.
dorkroom will soon feature a comprehensive documentation and guides section, providing details on how to use the website as well as easy to read guides for photography in general.
